Protection & control engineering for brownfield substations.
Protection and control is the core of what Amped I does. Since 2010 we have designed relay protection for utility substations from 12kV distribution feeders to 500kV nuclear switchyards. Most of it is brownfield work, where new microprocessor relays have to be wired into schemes that were built decades ago.
That is the hard part, and it is where we specialize. Our engineers read the existing prints, work out how the legacy scheme really operates, and design the new protection so it fits the yard, the control house and the utility’s own standards.
What we do
Relay protection design
Line, transformer, bus, breaker-failure, capacitor bank and feeder protection, primary and backup, designed to each utility’s protection philosophy.
Relay settings
Settings for microprocessor relays, developed alongside the physical design so the panels and the logic match.
Relay communications
Communications-assisted schemes, line current differential, fiber and line-carrier channels, and the networks that carry them.
PMU / DFR
Phasor measurement units, phasor data concentrators, digital fault recorders and satellite-synchronized timing.
Voltage regulation
Load tap changer control, transformer overload relief and voltage regulation for substation transformers.
Full-station relay upgrades
Whole-substation relay replacements: new panels, demolition drawings for retired equipment and complete wiring packages.
What we deliver
- Schematics packages issued for approval (IFA)
- Review comments incorporated before issue for construction
- Complete wiring diagram packages issued for construction (IFC)
- Demolition drawings for retired equipment
- Relay panel and control house layouts
- AC/DC panelboard and power wiring diagrams
- Remote wiring diagrams for breakers

What voltage levels do you work on?
Our project experience runs from 12kV and 34kV distribution substations up to 500kV transmission and nuclear substations.
Do you work on existing (brownfield) substations?
Yes. It is our specialty. Most of our work connects new protection into existing schemes, including demolition drawings and revisions to existing wiring.
Do you design to our utility’s standards?
Yes. We work from each utility’s standards and existing prints, and incorporate your review comments before construction drawings are issued.
Which relay platforms do you use?
Our recent projects use Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) relays and automation controllers extensively. We design to the platforms each utility has standardized on.
