Distribution Engineering

Distribution engineering for smarter city grids.

Distribution systems are where new technology reaches the most customers. Amped I helps utilities bring modern protection, monitoring and communications into their distribution grids so they run more efficiently and sustainably.

Our distribution work ranges from feeder relaying in dense city substations to program-scale rollouts across dozens of sites.

What we do

  • Feeder relaying

Feeder protection, feeder current differential, underfrequency load shedding and bus relaying.

  • Network protectors

Network protector design for secondary network systems.

  • Overhead distribution

    Overhead distribution design.

  • Communications (SSN)

SSN communications design for distribution systems.

  • Distribution PMUs

Phasor measurement at the distribution edge, giving utilities grid frequency visibility.

  • Breaker failure and transformer upgrades

Relay protection upgrades at distribution substations, delivered as part of larger programs.

What we deliver

  • Designs for 12kV and 34kV distribution substations
  • PDC cabinet installation with satellite and antenna, per site standards
  • IP-based communications over fiber and copper
  • Conduit and tray design for cable installation
  • Material requests and procurement support
  • Schematics for IFA and wiring packages for IFC
FAQ

Common questions

What distribution voltages do you work on?

Our distribution work covers 12kV to 34kV systems.

Do you support multi-site programs?

Yes. Our distribution PMU program has produced designs for more than 30 substations to date.

Can you work in dense urban substations?

Yes. Our IEC 61850 intelligent substation program in Chicago included 18 feeder relaying positions and a new 12kV switchgear building.
