Substation engineering, from the control house to the yard.
Beyond protection and control, Amped I delivers the substation design around it: control house layouts, DC and AC auxiliary systems, equipment replacement and integrated substation design.
Because the same team designs the relaying, the whole package fits together. Panel layouts, power wiring, batteries and communications are coordinated from the start.
What we do
Intelligent substation upgrades
Smart substation upgrades, including IEC 61850-compliant designs with redundant fiber and all-new relaying.
Integrated substation design
Coordinated design across protection, control, power and communications for upgraded and expanded substations.
Control houses and switchgear buildings
New control house layouts and switchgear building design.
Batteries and DC systems
Battery evaluations, new batteries with monitoring, and DC distribution panels.
AC auxiliary power
AC auxiliary power systems and AC/DC panelboard design.
Equipment replacement
Replacement of aging substation equipment, with demolition drawings and revised wiring.
Civil / structural
Civil and structural design for substation work.
Operating procedures
Operating procedures for new and modified equipment.

Common questions
What is an intelligent substation?
A substation where protection, control and monitoring run over digital communications, typically to IEC 61850, with microprocessor relays, redundant fiber networks and monitoring of equipment such as batteries.
Can you expand an existing substation?
Yes. One example is a renewables-driven 100kV substation expansion for NorthWestern Energy that added a new control house and six and a half new relay panels.
Do you handle more than one substation at a time?
Yes. One program covered four IEC 61850 intelligent substations for a major Midwest utility.
