500kV Nuclear Substation Full Relay Upgrade

Amped I completed the design and engineering of upgrading all the existing protection/control relays for an entire 500kV Nuclear Substation.

The substation is configured with five 500kV lines (four in a breaker and a half configuration and one in a double bus double breaker configuration), two 500/230/12kV transformers, two 500kV capacitor banks and twenty MOD’s. All new microprocessor relays were installed in 27 new panels (SCADA, Metering and LTC included).

For this project the following relays were included:

  • (10) SEL-411Ls (Pri and Bu for each of the 5 lines)
  • (4) SEL-487Es (Pri and Bu for each transformer)
  • (4) SEL-487Bs (Pri and Bu for each bus)
  • (7) SEL-2440s (MOD control for each line and transformer)
  • (29) SEL-2440s (Pri and Bu AMS for each duplex panel and cap cubicle)
  • (1) Axion 2240 (LTC control for transformer #1 & #2)
  • (4) SEL-487V Relays for Capacitor 2 & 3 Protection and Control (Pri and Bu for cap)
  • (4) SEL-2506 Relays for Capacitor 2 & 3 Trips (Pri and Bu in each cubicle)
  • (2) Orion LX (Pri and Bu SCADA)

  • (2) SEL-2488 Satellite Clocks (Pri and Bu)
  • (1) 3400 IRIG-B Distribution Module

Amped I designed and provided the new schematics package for IFA along with the associated demolition drawings. Amped I incorporated all comments on the schematics package prior the IFC submittal. Amped I also designed the wiring drawings package and submitted for IFC.

Hegewisch Substation Intelligent/Smart Upgrades

Amped I designed and engineered P&C for four intelligent substations that were IEC61850 compliant. Each substation had all new relaying with redundant fibers, new batteries, new ATO and a DNP connection to the fire protection system.

Schemes included time programmed tripping, load shedding and auto bus tie closing. All of the new relaying was SEL relays along with RuggedComm switches.

Amped I’s technical role in upgrading the substations included:

  • DC Interlock
  • 2 Line Carriers
  • 18 Feeder Relaying (SEL 351S & SEL 751)
  • 7 Bus Relaying (SEL 751A & SEL 451), (2- RSG2100 switches)
  • 4 Transformer Positions (SEL 787, SEL 387, SEL 451 & SEL 311C)
  • 4 Feeder Position doors with Current Diff (SEL-311L)
  • Transformer Overload Relief (TOR)
  • Transformer Voltage Regulation
  • Bus Sectionalizing
  • New Batteries and Battery Monitoring
  • DC Distribution Panels
  • Auto-Throw-Over-Switch
  • SCADA
  • Wiring Diagrams
  • Circuit Schedule
  • Conduit Schedule
  • Fiber Panels
  • Procedures
  • Document Management

At Hegewisch Substation, Amped I replaced all existing substation relaying with new microprocessor devices in order to create this intelligent substation.
Design to upgrade 138kV line relaying and communication for one (1) transmission line and design for a new 12kV switchgear building to replace old switchgear.

Distribution PMU Installation Program

Amped I supports Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) designs in local substations, helping to measure frequency in the power grid. The designs include installation of PDC cabinets, SEL 3573, satellite and antenna, and ethernet switches. Relay lines and transformers may need to be upgraded as well.

To date, this program has involved designs for 30+ substations to date that includes upgrades of both 12kV and 34kV distribution line, breaker failure, transformer relay protection as well as installation of conduits and trays for cable installation.  These projects also include creation of material requests to procure material for projects. To accomplish these projects design has SCADA, PMU, and Relay upgrade or installation designs while ensuring that the antenna and GPS clock met site specific standards as required per site.

Amped I’s technical role in upgrading the substations included:

  • PMU
  • Relay Upgrades
  • SCADA
  • IP based communications
  • Fiber and copper infrastructure communications
  • PMU’s and Communication Processors include:
